Who What Why Christian History Series
How do we make history come alive in our homeschool? I am constantly on the lookout for high quality books to enhance our homeschool and am so excited about the Who, What, Why? Series from Danika Cooley.
This is the first installment. The three books include:
- Who Was Martin Luther?
- What Was the Gutenberg Bible?
- Why Did the Reformation Happen?

About the Book:
Who Was Martin Luther?

- It’s 90 pages broken into 8 chapters with a timeline at the end.
- I love the creative chapter titles (A Diet of Worms ~ Kidnapped! ~ A War, a Wife, and a Funeral). They are sure to catch and keep your child’s attention.
- There are fun pictures throughout the book (black and white).
- The chapters are short enough for your middle grade (8-11 year old) readers to read on their own or for you to read aloud as a family.
- Each chapter is LOADED with tons of fun facts and relevant information told in story form.
“God’s truth never stays hidden for long. It’s a truth worth staking our lives upon, worth fighting for, and worth studying daily.”
– DANIKA COOLEY, WHO WAS MARTIN LUTHER?
My Review:
I loved this book! I learned a ton of information I didn’t know, and my kids did too. I appreciated how the author brought history to life, connected church and world events, and loaded the pages with action. I highly recommend the book and can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
“Sometimes the people who change the world come from the most unlikely of places.”
– DANIKA COOLEY, WHO WAS MARTIN LUTHER?
A Child’s Perspective:
My daughter wanted to share her thoughts with you as well, so here is her review:
“The book is really good and I like how it has a lot of true things and quotes from Martin Luther. I also think it’s really good because it has some pictures but not too many. It’s nice that the words aren’t too small. The only thing I didn’t like was that it could have a little more action and some color. It was a really good book and I think you should get it! It teaches you about the Bible, has action, and is a good story.”
-Kendra Jo (age 8)
About the Book:
What Was the Gutenberg Bible?
“It was through Johann Gutenberg that God’s Word spread like dandelion seed in the wind, bringing life to the world.”
– DANIKA COOLEY, WHAT WAS THE GUTENBERG BIBLE?
- The book is 91 pages, broken into 7 chapters and ending with a timeline.
- Each chapter is loaded with interesting historical information written in story form and includes some black and white illustrations.
- It covers topics about the Bible, Johann Gutenberg’s life and invention of the printing press, the road to reformation, and how the Bible came to be translated into other languages.

My Review:
I loved the simplicity of this book. It is packed with interesting information, fun facts, and tons of action to keep your kids (and you) turning pages! It’s perfect for family read alouds or for your middle grade (aged 8-11) student to read on their own. I highly recommend it!
“We do know that our great God is in control of all history—every event and every salvation. God cares about his Word, and he sends it forward into the world to accomplish his will.”
