Who What Why Christian History Series
I’m constantly on the hunt for quality history books for my kids with a Christian worldview, and our family has loved this series from author Danika Cooley.
This is the second installment. The three books include:
- Who were the Abolitionists?
- What was the Underground Railroad?
- Why did Slavery End?

About the Book:
Who were the Abolitionists?

- It’s 96 pages broken down into ten chapters.
- The book also includes an intro: For Such a Time as This, and a Timeline that connects the abolitionists’ lives and work chronologically at the end of the book.
- There are fun pictures throughout (black and white).
- The chapters are short enough for your middle-grade (8-11-year-old) readers to read on their own or for you to read aloud as a family.
- Each chapter is LOADED with tons of fun facts and relevant information told in story form.
This book provides brief biographies of 10 famous abolitionists who changed history as we know it:
- Granville Sharp (1735-1813)
- Phillis Wheatley (c. 1753-1784)
- Olaudah Equiano (c. 1745-1797)
- Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846)
- William Wilberforce (1759-1833)
- Zachary Macaulay (1768-1838)
- William Knibb (1803-1845)
- Sojourner Truth (1797-1883)
- Frederick Douglass (c. 1817-1895)
- Harriet Tubman (c. 1820-1913)
What I Loved:
I LOVE that the book starts off with biblical application for our kids to understand that God has called and created them for such a time as this. It dives into the story of Esther and helps them make the connection between her life and how each abolitionist was able to make a difference in their culture as well.
I love that the book is faith-focused. The author paints a picture that helps our kids see God working in and through ordinary individuals in an extraordinary way.
I also appreciated how simple and engaging the books were. The biographies shared important details without losing kids’ attention. Throughout the stories, kids gain a better understanding of how the heart of God is portrayed through each of the abolitionists’ actions.
About the Book:
What was the Underground Railroad?
- It’s 96 pages broken down into 7 chapters.
- The book also includes an intro chapter and a Timeline at the end.

- The chapters are short enough for your middle-grade (8-11-year-old) readers to read on their own or for you to read aloud as a family.
- Each chapter is LOADED with tons of fun facts and relevant information told in story form that keeps kids turning pages

What I Loved:
This book paints a beautiful picture of how the Underground Railroad worked and how the brave men and women who loved God took risks to fight against injustice and demonstrated courage to stand against wrongdoing at a governmental level. It also helps our kids understand times when the Bible encourages us to do the same and how to honor God and authority in the midst of those difficult decisions.

This book dives deep into the root causes of slavery, how it impacted various parts of our world, and how it eventually came to an end. It is comprehensive and engaging. It helps our kids look wrestle with tough questions and see how God worked in and through this time in history.
How We Used the Product in our Homeschool:
This year we are studying US History, so these books worked perfectly as supplemental material. We read them aloud (a chapter or two at a time) and discussed them as a family (with my 5th & 2nd graders).
We also LOVE a good lapbook, and were thrilled that Danika provided some great ones FREE! You can grab them here:
Final Thoughts:
I LOVE the Who What Why Series and highly recommend it! I can’t wait for the next set of books to come out!
Be sure to snag the first set on The Reformation Church too! (You'll find my review of the books here).
